The recently passed Con-Nichiwa, Tucson’s premiere anime convention, was held at the JW Marriott Starr Pass Resort & Spa for the first time. Well, it sounds like it was also the last time. The convention recently announced due to issues with hotel, they have gotten out of their 2020 contract and will be moving to the Double Tree – Reid Park for June 12 – 14, 2020. The full announcement:

Hi Everyone. We wanted to take a moment and update everyone on our plans for 2020. After this weekend at the JW Marriott Starr Pass we were left with some very large concerns. Most notably was how our attendees were treated by the hotel over the entire weekend. There were also major issues with how photography was handled by the hotel, parking being changed on us at the last minute to off site, and no access from the SunTran which we previously had. In all, it really caused a tremendous strain on our staff and our attendees. We made this move to the JW to give our attendees an amazing place to have a convention, but in the end it turned into something else.

For these reasons and many more we are making a change for our 2020 event. We have worked out with the JW to cancel our 2020 contract, which allowed us to find a new location. The great news is we already have a new location picked and under contract and it’s still the same weekend as previously announced (June 12-14, 2020)

We are happy to say that all the issues we spelled out above, as well as many others, will be resolved with this move and will also allow us growth in the future. So with all this being said, we would like to announce that Con Nichiwa 2020 will be at the Double Tree Reid Park in Tucson Arizona! We will be opening up the hotel room block very soon and will also be announcing many updates to keep everyone apprised to the new location and what will be available.

We thank you for your support over the years and hope this year’s hiccups will not deter you from attending our show in the future. Please don’t hesitate to reach out to our staff if you have questions or concerns with what transpired this year or with the move to the new location.

Thank you,
Greg Fennell, CEO

Previous to the JW Marriott Starr Pass, Con-Nichiwa was held at the Tucson Convention Center for several years.
