Free Comic Book Day is May 3 this year and continues to grow in popularity. This single day is an effort to bring in new readers and give special “Free Comic Book Day” editions of certain titles from Marvel, DC, IDW, and more.
Not all retailers participate and some participate in their own way. This list will continue to update all the way up to May 3rd so make sure to keep checking back to see what your favorite local shop will be doing.
Flagstaff
Will be holding a raffle of various sketch cover variants. Entries will be given for every canned food item you bring in or for every $10 you spend.
Mesa
Samurai Comics
Samurai in Mesa will be hosting the three annual Arizona Comic Mini Expo which features a bunch of comic creators doing signings and sketches. Expect cosplayers and activities for the kids.
Greg’s Comics
Will be giving away the normal free comic book day titles.
Phoenix/Glendale
Jesse James Comics
Free Comic Day will be held on May 3-5, announced to be at store is cosplayer Victoria Paege. Also announced so for is Tim Vigil who be signing the Jesse James exclusive “The Secret Life of Crows”. Expect more announcements.
The Phoenix chapter of Very Awesome Girls organization will be on hand to do a “Canine Sidekick Tryouts” where you can meet some very awesome adoptable dogs. Face painting and refreshments will also be a part of it.
All About Comics and Books
On hand will be a whole list of characters from 10A-6P, get your picture taken with some of your favorite DC characters. A raffle will be held for a superhero package, a raffle ticket purchase also gets you a 15% off any purchase. 100% off the proceeds of the raffle to go to Make A Wish foundation. Also, free face painting from 11A-2P.
Enterprise Comics and Collectables
Will have the normal free comic book titles as well as cosplayers.
Hero Comics
Will have a bunch of artists on hand, thousands of $1.00 comics, and cosplayers.
Drawn To Comics
Store specials, raffles and cosplayers will be hand. Also attending are Joshua Green and Christopher Ness of Biker Mice From Mars fame.
Samurai Comics
Will be having sales and giveaways as well as the normal free comic book titles. If you donate canned food or come dressed up, you get even more free comics.
Pop Culture Paradise @ Collector’s Marketplace (Sunday May 4th)
Can food drive, bring a can, get an extra comic. Oh hand will be a ton of local artists and creators such as Jeff Pina, Anabel Martinez, and Val Hochberg. This is in celebration of “May the 4th Be With You” so you will see Star Wars characters as well!
Tempe
Ash Avenue Comics
Will be open from 9A-8P and having a store wide sale. A portion of the Very Awesome Girls will be at the store as well.
Pop Culture Comics
Enjoy food, a showing of The Hobbit and giveaways this year at Pop Culture Paradise. They will also be holding a can food drive to benefit St. Vincent De Paul’s fight against hunger.
Expect local creators to be on hand as well!
Tucson
Charlie’s Comics
Free sketches by local talent: Ashler, Santino Castaneda, Jenn Corella, John Chihak, Gene Hall, Beatriz Romero, Ernest Romero, Ryan “Huna” Smith.
Raffle and silent auction of artwork and other items that will benefit The Salvation Army
Fantasy Comics
Fantasy Comics will have 2 professional comic book artists signing and sketching for the day: Jolyon Yates (Lego Ninjago) and Zach Howard (The Cape, Wild Blue Yonder)
Heroes and Villains
A handful of cosplay groups will be hand: Arizona Avengers, Justice League of Arizona, The 501st Legion, and more will available for photos. A photo booth will be set up to take your pictures as well as free crafts for your kids. Also “Youslydog” hot dog stand will be fighting your hunger and 93.1 will be pleasing your ears with a dj playing music.
